February 8, 1940 – Dallas Morning News HENRY CLAY SPILLERS Pioneer Passes Away Near His 95th Birthday Special to the News. WHEATLAND. Dallas Co., Texas, Feb. 7. – Death wrote finis to the life history of Henry Clay Spillers, who came to Dallas County fifty-five years ago in a covered wagon and who would have celebrated his ninety-fifth birthday in May. In recent years Mr. Spillers’ neighbors gathered each May 11 to congratulate him on the anniversary. Mr. Spillers died at the home of his son, Jess Spillers. His passing was due more than anything else to the infirmities of old age, his physician said. He outlived his wife and seven of their ten children. He began life in Wilson County, Tennessee, but at the age of 3 he went with his parents to Russellville, Ark. In Arkansas he married Sarah Jane Hamilton in 1867, but he brought his family to Texas in 1885, settling at Wheatland, where he farmed for many years. After Mrs. Spiller’s death in 1915 he spent several years in Dallas with his daughter, Mrs. Walter R. Spain, 115 West Page, but in recent years he had made his home with his son at Wheatland. Besides Mrs. Spain and the son, Jess Spillers, he is survived by another son, Ebb Spillers, Dallas, and a number of grandsons. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wheatland Methodist Church by Rev. J. W. Lindsley of Duncanville. Mr. Spillers’ grandsons will be his pallbearers.
